In a large capacity-memory system with an information-medium such as a magnetic tape (T), a method of controlling a take-up motor (16) in such a manner that the time interval required for clarifying the results of error-checking causes no delay in starting the step-transfer of the medium. Recording tracks are formed in strips obliquely crossing the longitudinal direction of the magnetic tape (T). When a rotating magnetic head (14) finishes recording or reproducing on one of the recording tracks, a data-end-signal pulse is generated, and the take-up motor (16) starts step-transferring the magnetic tape (T), before the results of the error-check of the reproduced data is known. In the normal case of no error, a step-instruction is generated so as to continue the transferring, and the rotating magnetic head (14) performs recording or reproducing on the next recording track. If an error is detected, a reverse-rotation signal pulse is generated and the take-up motor (16) is reversely rotated so that the former recording track is recorded or reproduced again.
|
