The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the production of playing surfaces, preferably as an ice-skating or roller-skating surface. According to the process, this is achieved in that preferably roll-up or stackable sheet-like elements reinforced with liquid ducts are associated so as to be capable of adjoining one another, to form any surface design forms, and are connected to cold-generating and/or heat-generating units, so that either an ice surface can be formed by utilising the heat of the environment or a de-iced playing surface can be formed by the reverse process. In terms of the apparatus, the mat-like elements (4) are provided with an edge-reinforcing system (3) an a return system (5) supplying a cold medium and/or a heat medium, these reinforcements as well as the reinforcements (7) having elevations relative to the surface mat (4), for the purpose of limiting the water-mass thickness to be frozen.
