An apparatus (1) for applying viscous material, in particular epoxy resin, or mixtures containing epoxy resin, to receiving surfaces of workpieces (2) has a substantially vertically arranged container (6) for the material. The end face (12) of the container (6), facing the workpiece (2) contains one or more outlet openings (13) for the material. A raising and lowering mechanism (14) serves to lower the container (6) in order that the end face (12) can be set down on the receiving surface of the workpiece (2), and subsequently to lift the container (6) off again from the workpiece (2). The height of each outlet opening (13) is less than its average cross-sectional dimension and, in the case of very different cross-sectional dimensions, is preferably at most equal to the smallest cross-sectional dimension. This dimensioning of the outlet openings together with the viscosity of the material achieves the effect that the material is discharged from the container without the aid of plungers, doctor blades or other mechanical parts and is applied to the receiving surfaces of the workpieces. <IMAGE>
