The present invention provides a compound of the formula (1):
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="33" wi="102" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>and pharmaceutically acceptable salts and in-vivo hydrolysable esters thereof wherein R' is carboxy, R<Sup>2</Sup> is hydrogen or carboxy, R<Sup>3</Sup> is hydrogen, acyl, C<Sub>1-6</Sub> alkyl or C<Sub>2-6</Sub> alkenyl, any of such R<Sup>3</Sup> groups being optionally substituted, and R<Sup>4</Sup> is an amino or protected amino group.

Processes for the preparation of these compounds are described as is their use in the treatment of bacterial infection.
