In a method for defrosting the ice precipitating from the air on the surface of an air cooler of a heat pump or of a refrigerator, a defrosting cycle is initiated automatically at particular time intervals, and during the course of this the air cooler is subjected to a quantity of heat sufficient for melting the precipitated quantity of ice. The time sequence of the defrosting cycles is controlled by a microprocessor in accordance with values for the quantity of ice precipitating on the air cooler of the heat pump or refrigerator, these values being calculated from the Mollier h-x diagram for moist air. In the case of fixed rating parameters of a heat-pump or refrigerator system, the microprocessor can be programmed in such a way that the control of the defrosting cycles can be carried out solely as a result of a measurement of the temperature and relative air humidity of the air entering at the air cooler.
