A receiver housing, in the cylindrical chamber of which is a control slide valve which is fixed to the separating element of a spring element and tapers conically towards this, is mounted on the housing of the spring element, which may be, for example, a hydropneumatic reservoir. At the same time the control slide valve is enclosed by a passage of defined diameter provided in the housing of the spring element or in the receiver housing. The receiver housing is connected via pressure medium lines to the shock absorber of a passenger car and to a pressure medium pump. Under an increased vehicle load a quantity of oil corresponding to the increased vehicle load is fed into the hydraulic system via the pressure medium pump. In this way the spring loading of the spring element is more highly pretensioned and the control slide valve thereby shifted upwards. Since the latter tapers conically upwards, the opening of the passage is correspondingly reduced. When the wheel suspensions are compressed, pressure medium is expelled from the piston side of the shock absorber, which medium must pass through the passage in the receiver housing constricted as a function of the load, thereby damping the spring movements of the wheel suspensions.
