As apparatus batteries (1) become increasingly discharged, it is intended that the actual basic functions of the apparatus be maintained on reaching a lower limiting voltage, while the additional functions, which consume considerably more energy, are switched off. In the case of an electric clock, in this way, additional loads (4) (such as display lighting and the alarm) are automatically switched off, so that they no longer work despite the operation of the function keys (7) and of the internal setting devices. The actual clock mechanism (2) continues to operate, however. At the same time, the user is informed of the state of the battery (1). The additional loads (4) cannot be brought back into use again until, possibly after the battery (1) has recovered, a voltage value is reached which is above the lower limiting voltage, by closing the controllable switch (6). <IMAGE>
