In a device for grilling or roasting, in particular for large grilling or roasting products, the product is fixed on a rotatable spit. A direct-current, low-voltage motor (15) is arranged with a gear mechanism (14) for driving the spit (29) together with a transformer with a rectifier (18) on a portable frame (1). The motor (15) can be driven selectively via the transformer (18) at mains voltage or directly via a battery. A battery charging device can be used as a transformer with rectifier, which is provided, if appropriate, with an interrupter for the low-voltage cable during grilling operation and with an interrupter (23) to the direct-current, low-voltage motor in battery-charging operation. <IMAGE>
