In a heat exchanger for an absorption refrigeration or heat pump system, the heat exchange pipes (10) are combined to form groups (12, 14, 16) which each extend in a horizontal plane. Each of these groups (12, 14, 16) is surrounded by a flat shell (32, 34, 36) which has an overflow (40) which opens into the shell lying below. In order to achieve a clear direction of flow of the second heat transfer medium which flows around the outside of the heat exchange pipes (10) and in order to be able to operate with reduced fluid filling and without a decrease in the exchange of heat, the overflows (40) are each arranged at such a height that the second heat transfer medium flows around the heat exchange pipes at most at a point two thirds up them. At the same time, the heat exchange pipes are connected to the floor (52) of the shells (32, 34, 36) in certain areas or at certain points leaving free at least one gap (54) and are provided on their outer surface with a capillary structure. <IMAGE>
