The invention relates to a plastic container having a side wall, which has an aligned substantially cylindrical lower section, and a bottom which is connected to the side wall and terminates the lower end of the container. The bottom comprises a substantially elliptical bottom wall and a multiplicity of aligned outwardly convex legs which are spaced apart in the circumferential direction and extend from the elliptical wall. The elliptical wall has a first section which extends downwards from the lower cylindrical side wall section and has a radius which is less than the diameter of the container. Each leg has a first convex section which extends downwards from the cylindrical section of the side wall and has a radius which is greater than the diameter of the cylindrical section. Furthermore, each leg comprises diverging side wall sections which merge radially inwards into the elliptical wall section of the bottom wall. <IMAGE>
