An aircraft tyre is built with a composite subtread reinforcement system involving at least three superimposed plies each having a cord bias of 0-30 degrees from the circumferential axis, a central portion made of relatively inextensible cords and borders made of relatively extensible cords. The tyre profile, when mounted on a wheel but not inflated has a carcass crown curvature radius of up to 0.2, pref. 0.08-0.15, and a max. sidewall curvature radius of up to 0.25. Used for mfr. of tyres having a carcass crown curvature of up to 0.12, pref. 0.04-0.10, and a max. sidewall curvature ratio of up to 0.14, to satisfy normal aircraft tyre shape standards, since extension of the sub-tread borders by service pressures modifies the shape of the carcass. Deformation of the extensible subtread reinforcement borders allows the carcass crown and sidewall curvatures to be reduced to the required levels whilst establishing a tensile stress in the subtread borders to suppress stable dynamic stress variations at high speed. Suppresses vibrations which can otherwise develop sufficiently to initiate delamination and loss of tread if the subtread reinforcement border stress patterns are low or even compressive. |
