A description is given of a signalling device for alternating symbols for potentially explosive regions, in particular mine (underground) workings, in which at least one light source (7a, 7b) is detachably arranged in an opaque, closed housing (6) and at least one mount (frame) (5a, 5b) which holds the ends of a bundle (4) of light pipes (guides) together in the manner of a packet is inserted in a matching housing opening in such a way that the light entry faces (10a, 10b) of the light pipes (4) are situated in the illuminating beam path of the light source (7a, 7b). Outside the housing (6), the light pipes (4) extend in a plurality of independent flexible arms, and are detachably plugged from the rear with their free ends into a grid plate (1) provided with a perforation grid (3). The grid plate (1) forms the display panel on which arbitrarily changeable alternating symbols on the light exit faces of the light pipes (4) are visible from the front side of the grid plate through the perforations (3). It is preferable to be able to switch on at least two light sources (7a, 7b) jointly or separately via a changeover device (9), so that it is possible to change the symbols via the changeover device from a control centre without replugging the free ends of the light pipes, or automatically to connect other light sources in the event of failure of one light source. <IMAGE>
