The invention relates to a shielded shipping flask and/or shielded storage canister for spent nuclear reactor fuel elements, having a lateral surface of the flask or canister, a base thereof and a shielding cover system. The lateral surface of the flask or canister and the base thereof are cast in one piece from cast iron or cast steel. The lateral surface of the flask or canister has cooling ribs which are cast on and, if necessary, interrupted. In the region of the central level of the lateral surface, the lateral surface of the flask or canister has a greater wall thickness, which projects outwards and forms a circumferential shielding bulge. However, the arrangement is made such that the cooling ribs have a reduced rib height in the region of the shielding bulge and pass through smoothly with their backs and do not project outwards. A neutron-absorbing lateral surface can additionally be applied to the cooling ribs in the region of the shielding bulge. <IMAGE>
