The invention relates to a process for zero-balancing a measuring head (2) in cylindrical grinding machines, the measuring jaws (7, 8) which can be displaced with respect to one another and belong to the measuring head (2) resting, in the operating position, diametrically opposite one another on a workpiece (10) and the measurement values of the measuring head (2) being fed to a machine control means in order to guide a grinding tool (9). In known processes, the measuring jaws, when the workpiece was removed, were displaced towards one another until they were in abutment in order thus to define the actual zero point. Since the tracing heads (11), however, were subject to wear, owing to their abutment on the workpiece (10), during the machining of the workpiece, the finished dimensions of the workpieces removed were checked by hand in order to repeat the zero balancing in the event of excessive erroneous dimensions occurring. As a result, however, the production time of a workpiece was increased untenably. The invention proposes to raise the measuring jaws (7, 8), at any pre-selectable point in time, from the workpiece (15), to pivot the measuring head (2) to a reference measuring pin (12) and to rest the measuring jaws (7, 8) diametrically opposite one another on the reference measuring pin (12) in order then to set the measurement value, given by the measuring head, as zero point of the measuring head (2). Owing to this process, not only is an erroneous dimension due to the wear of the tracing heads (11) of the measuring jaws (7, 8) to be avoided, but possible heat expansions may also be taken into account. An advantageous apparatus for carrying out the process is represented in Figure 4. <IMAGE>
