Projection device to display map material in a motor vehicle, in each instance map extracts being applied to a film as carrier material which is movable with motor drive in the region of an optical system (1). A central control unit (12) accepts a target value from an input keyboard and compares this target value with identification features on the film in the form of codings, which are scanned by a code transmitter. If the desired map extract as target value in the encoded form is in agreement with the map extract which is situated at this moment in the image plane as it passes through under motor drive, then the central control unit stops the motor drive of the film movement. The desired map extract is projected onto a ground glass plate or is reflected into the windscreen, i.e. virtually directly within the field of view of the driver. <IMAGE>
