A device for the stepped vertical adjustment of the upper fastening or deflecting fitting for the shoulder belt of a safety-belt system in motor vehicles consists of a guide rail attached to a vehicle-body part and having recesses, into which engages at least one associated blocking member of a sliding piece carrying the fitting. The release of the sliding piece has hitherto been obtained by pressing on a locking spring passing through the sliding piece. There is here the problem of the release of the sliding piece in the event of an accident and in that the known device is inconvenient for the user to handle. The object of the invention is, therefore, to guarantee a reliable locking, even in the event of an accident, and for a sustained increase in operating convenience. For this, the locking mechanism is designed in the manner of a belt buckle known per se with a pressbutton, the guide rail (11) with its recesses (36) corresponding to the buckle tongue. The pressbutton is designed as a sliding button (18) which is moveable parallel to the guide rail (11) and which, by means of appropriate shapes (40, 41), controls the longitudinal movements of the spring-loaded blocking member (34) movable transversely relative to the sliding direction. <IMAGE>
