The machine for picking up and pressing agricultural crops, such as hay and straw, to form roll-shaped bales consists of a winding chamber which is movable by means of an undercarriage and which possesses, for opening the winding space bounded by it, a rearward part which can swing up about an upper horizontal axis. The winding chamber comprises two plane side walls forming the end faces of the winding space, a circumferential limitation formed or run over by conveying means and surrounding the winding space at the front, at the top and at the rear and, in its lower region, a horizontal draw-in gap, in front of which a pick-up device for the crop is arranged. To make the machine cheaper and simpler and to reduce its drive power, the circumferential limitation of the winding chamber also itself directly surrounds the winding space on the underside and is brought directly up to the draw-in gap and the pick-up device.
