A handrail according to the invention consists of individual handrail segments which are cut out of a blank shaped approximately in the form of a helix, the width of which corresponds to a multiple of the width of the handrail segments. This blank is manufactured from at least one slab-shaped workpiece which is subsequently divided up along the pitch line of the blank into the handrail segments, which are then connected to one another to form the handrail. If the pitch of the blank differs from the pitch of the spiral staircase, the handrail segments can be cut out of the blank with a different pitch by correcting the pitch marked on the blank as a line.
