The invention relates to a method for varying the power output of a spring brake cylinder in relation to a further identical spring brake cylinder of a motor vehicle emergency brake, and to a device for implementing this method. Differing residual stored pressures are generated in the spring brake cylinder according to a required differing power output. When the brake is operated, the spring brake cylinder with the lower stored pressure is first discharged and the discharging of the spring brake cylinder with the higher stored pressure is initiated as soon as a pressure loss corresponding to the initial pressure difference is reached in the other spring brake cylinder. The higher stored pressure results, in the one spring brake cylinder, in a preloading force which keeps the power output, over its graduated range, lower by a constant amount than that of the other spring brake cylinder. When fully vented, on the other hand, the full spring forces of both cylinders are effective for braking. The device has a relay valve in order to feed, for example, compressed air at varying pressure to the spring brake cylinders. The latter are discharged with a time delay, this being initiated at the spring brake cylinder with the smaller stored pressure.
