<p>The reactor is cooled by molten metal in a main reactor vessel with a vertical axis and a domed base. On the concave internal surface of the domed base is a ring(a) supporting a curved plate(b). On the top, concave surface of plate(b) is a set of vertical pillars(c), which pref. consist of tubes with a large dia. and thin walls. The top ends of the pillars or tubes(c) are fixed to the underside of a plate(d) on which the reactor core and associated appts. rest. Plate(b) may be omitted, so the bottom ends of tubes(c) rest on the internal surface of the domed base of the main vessel. In the case of a main vessel with a dia. of 22 m, the wt. of the support can be reduced from 200 - 170 t, and a gain in height of 2 m is obtd. due to the reduced height of the support. The simple structure also has an increased resistance to earthquakes.</p> |
