While a key is being pushed into the key channel of a cylinder lock, the tumbler pins are moved up and down according to the key serration, until, with the key pushed in completely, the opening position of the tumbler pins is reached. The total movement of at least one tumbler pin is measured mechanically or electronically during the pushing-in movement and is compared with a desired value, whereupon, if there is agreement, a detent of the cylinder core is cancelled and/or a relay for switching on or switching off an alarm system is actuated. Between the depressions for the positioning of the tumbler pins, the key has teeth, the height of which is varied in order to form the key code.
