The use of steroid trienones and steroid trienone derivatives as tracers for determining steroids by fluorescence photometry

Use of steroids with a trienone structure of the general formula I <IMAGE> in which X is an atom or atomic group which is bonded by a double bond to the steroid framework, especially an oxygen atom, an imino, hydroxyimino, carboxymethyloximino or lower acylhydrazino group, and R is a C17 side-chain, especially a 17 beta -hydroxy, 17 beta -acetyl or 17 beta -acetyl-17 alpha -hydroxy group, and where the steroid molecule can contain further double bonds and/or substituents which do not influence the fluorescence properties, as tracers for determining steroids with a similar structure, for example a 4-en-3-one structure or a 1,4-dien-3-one structure or a 3-one structure by fluorescence photometry. The compounds show a loss of their fluorescence on protein binding. They are suitable as tracers for fluorescence immunoassays with a sensitivity in the pico- to nanomole range.
