A machine for embossing type plates has a daisywheel (34) and two coordinate drives (16, 22 or 20, 24, 72, 84 to 88) to produce a relative movement between a type plate (66) to be embossed and the embossing position of the daisywheel (34). An embossing ram is moved by an electric motor (62) via an eccentric (56) against the back of an embossing plate (38) carried by the daisywheel (34) in order to emboss a character into the type plate. <IMAGE>
