Device for cooling bar material, in particular pipes, in a continuous process. The fundamental structure includes a cooling retort, a device for maintaining a fluidised bed in the cooling retort, a cooling device in the region of the fluidised bed, an inlet opening and, opposite the cooling retort in the axial direction, an outlet opening for the bar material to be treated. The cooling retort is designed as a cylindrical vessel which is closed in other respects and which has the inlet opening in one end face and the outlet opening in the opposite end face. Both in the inlet opening and in the outlet opening, gas outlet nozzles are arranged which generate sealing gas curtains. Both the device for maintaining the fluidised bed and the gas outlet nozzles can be operated with blanketing gas. According to a preferred embodiment, the bar material is passed along a treatment axis which is parallel to, but eccentric with respect to the vessel axis. The device for maintaining the fluidised bed generates a fluidised-bed surface which extends approximately up to the vessel axis. The cooling retort is rotatable by at least 180 DEG about the treatment axis in such a way that bar material passing through in the treatment axis can be passed through, as desired, in the fluidised bed or above the fluidised bed. <IMAGE>
