A method and device for detecting switch positions in the case of switches which are subjected to extreme environmental conditions such as high humidity and the like. A very short current pulse of high amplitude is produced and is supplied to the switching contacts to be checked at a repetition rate which can be predetermined. If a switching threshold is undershot, a downstream-connected bistable multivibrator is switched into its other switching state in order to indicate the checked switch position.
