The solid material is introduced into the crucible 11 of an oven 1 which is continuously swept by a carrier gas, such as nitrogen, coming from the source 7. The water vapour contained in the material to be analysed is released by heating to a suitable temperature, the water vapour is then introduced together with the stream of carrier gas into a column 3 containing a compound 21, for example lithium hydride, which is capable of reducing the water to gaseous hydrogen. The stream of carrier gas containing the gaseous hydrogen thus produced is then introduced into a detector 5 for measuring its hydrogen content, which enables the water content of the solid material to be determined. The solid materials can be metals and alloys such as uranium and steels. <IMAGE>
