<p>A major problem with electrostatic graphics printers is the difficulty of fault diagnosis, and consequent long periods out of service. The present printer has fault detectors, a fault-code generator and a non-volatile electronic memory for storing those codes. The fault codes are stored in chronological order and the machine includes means for displaying the memory contents, one code at a time, to give the service engineer a 'case history'. Fault detection is carried on automatically by the central processor which controls the printer operation. In the time intervals, e.g. 100 milliseconds, in the main printing program, an auxiliary program is run, which makes a series of tests to ensure that all the functions of the printer are operating correctly.</p> |
