Method for the replacement of railway lines and handling frame for implementing the same. The new sleepers are first stored in rows, each row comprising, side by side, the number of sleepers necessary for a length of line, each of the said sleepers being separated from the next by a distance equal to approximately half their in-situ spacing; one length of line is removed in a single operation, the rails and the sleepers remaining assembled; the ballast is renewed if this operation has not been done previously; one row of new sleepers are picked up together, and the new sleepers are put into position by first depositing in their final position that half of the row of sleepers formed by all the odd sleepers of the row, followed by the second half formed by all the even sleepers of the row.
