Between the free-piston engine and the turbine (12) is arranged the combustion chamber (7) which processes not only some of the compressed air generated by the free-piston engine, but also the hot exhaust gases mixed with unburnt fuels as a result of the scavenging operation. The turbine (14), which is connected to the shaft (13) and which works by the Rankine circulation process by means of the waste heat occurring after the turbine (12), can be loaded with any working materials, for example fluorohydrocarbons. <IMAGE>
