New catalysts for oxidn. of methacrolein to methacrylic acid have the empirical formula:Mo12PaMbCucVdXeYfOg. M is at least one of K, Pb and Cs; X is at least one of Ba, La, Ga, al, ag, Cd, Ti, Tl, Hg, Pb and Zn; Y is at least one of Fe, Co, Ni, Sr, Mn, In, Ta, Ge, S and Be; a=0.1-3, pref.0.5-1.75; b=0.1-3, pref. 0.8-2; c=0.1-2, pref. 0.1-0.8; d=0.1-2, pref. 0.1-0.8; e=0.01-2, pref. 0.02-0.5; f=0-2; g is a no. satisfying the valencies of the other elements. The catalysts have good thermal stability and give high selectivities for methacrylic acid, e.g. 80-86%.
