The rigging according to the invention is a rig, in which the sail area necessary for a ship is not in a single high plane lying amidships, but is subdivided into a plurality of part areas and distributed to one or more low masts which are located next to one another. This arrangement affords, particularly in refittings and new constructions for sea travel and merchant shipping, numerous advantages in aerodynamic, shipbuilding and operational terms, making the use of wind as an additional or main driving force for ships viable again.
