The i.c. engine piston comprises a metal piston head portion (10), e.g. aluminium or aluminium alloy. A skirt portion (11) is separated from the head by a heat-insulating barrier (e.g. an air gap) and consists of a plastics or is provided with a plastics outer surface. The plastics is pref. a polyether ether ketone, polyether-ketone, a mixt. of an aromatic polyether-ketone and a polyarylene sulphide, a poly-para hydroxybenzoic acid, a silicon-modified polyester, a polyetherimide, or a polyimide. It may be reinforced with glass fibres, metal fibres, organic, or metal oxide fibres.
