A fuel injector comprises a valve seat 21 in which there is formed an outlet orifice 22 and on which there is formed an annular seat rib 28 surrounding the orifice 22. The valve seat 24 is elastically forced into contact with the seat rib 28 and may be moved by a solenoid 17 against the action of the spring 26. The valve plate 24 is fitted with a circular row of openings 25 through which the fuel flows towards the outlet orifice. The axes of the openings 25 are inclined with respect to the axis of the valve plate 24 so that the fuel is given a swirling movement about the axis of the orifice before penetrating the outlet orifice 22. The fuel which leaves the orifice 22 has the form of a bushy atomised spray. <IMAGE>
