<p>A gas-fired burner (10) of the radiant type includes a boardlike heating element (30) constituted by a porous matrix of refractory fibers, the periphery of one side of the heating element (33) being bonded to and in fluidtight engagement with an open end of a sheet metal box (20) functioning as a gas plenum. A combustible gas mixture is fed into the plenum and forced through the porous heating element (30) for burning at the outer face (32) thereof. The boardlike heating element (30) is retained in position by a strip of perforated metal (25) fixed to the outer surface of the sheet metal box and extending about the edge of the heating element (30), the strip being bent over to hold the edge of the heating element (30) against the box (20). A multilayer blanket of thermal insulating material (40) wrapped around the sheet metal box (20) is held in position by bent metal tabs (70) and by the bent strip of perforated metal (25) retaining the heating element (30). A low cost diffuser (60) assembly ensures optimum gas mixture flow within the plenum. </p> |
