A fluidized bed gasifier (10) and process wherein the gasifier comprises a vertically disposed elongated vessel (12) defining an internal ash annulus region (22) disposed within a lower section of the vessel (12), a steeply sloping floor (28) disposed within the vessel (12) in the ash annulus region (22) and having orifices, process medium injection means (14) disposed upwardly through the floor (28) and into the ash annulus region (22), ash discharge means (44) for discharging ash from the vessel (12), and fluid injection means (26) disposed within the ash annulus region (22) for injection of a fluid downwardly into the ash annulus region (22).
