a transporting unit configured to transport a printing medium in a transport direction; a first printing head configured to perform a printing operation to print images on the printing medium by discharging ink; a second printing head positioned downstream from the first printing head in the transport direction and configured to perform a printing operation to print images on the printing medium by discharging ink; a preliminary discharge controller configured to cause the second printing head to perform a preliminary discharging operation that does not contribute to the printing operation; and a determination unit configured to determine a preliminary discharge amount of the preliminary discharging operation, wherein the preliminary discharge amount when an ink discharge amount of the printing operation by the first printing head is greater than a predetermined value is smaller than a preliminary discharge amount when the ink discharge amount is less than the predetermined value.
