A connection method comprising the steps of providing a cylindrical joint member (1) for connecting a first pipe (3) and a second pipe (7) inserted into opposite ends of said cylindrical joint member (1) almost to the center of said cylindrical joint member (1) and holding said pipes (3,7) in such a position that their ends are separated only by a narrow gap, and compressing both ends and the center of said cylindrical joint member (1) to form airtight seals between said first (3) and second pipes (7) and the ends of said cylindrical joint member (1) and also between the ends of said first (3) and second pipes (7) and the middle part of said cylindrical joint member (3).
