The invention relates to a process for recovering zinc from galvanised metal surfaces. Fields of application for the invention are hot-galvanising plants, steel construction and light section engineering, the standard components industry and agriculture, shipbuilding and the consumer goods industry. The aim of the invention is the development of a process, which improves the material economy in processing galvanised parts and widens the scope for effective utilisation of internal resources in the production of zinc. The object is to process the zinc to be removed in such a way that it can be recovered and reused, as far as possible, as high-grade zinc, without damaging the parts from which the zinc is removed. According to the invention, the object is achieved by carrying out the removal of zinc layers in 5 N sulphuric acid, until the sulphuric acid contains at least 100 g/l of zinc.
