A device for generating and transmitting a signal which is dependent on the fuel consumption to the driver of a motor vehicle is achieved according to the invention primarily by means of the following features: a) a consumption signal generator emits signals which are proportional to the respective fuel consumption; b) these signals act on a signal generator which has a preselectable setting for the respective desired limit of fuel consumption; c) if the signals emitted by the consumption signal generator exceed the preselected setting of the signal generator assigned to the corresponding signals, the said signal generator emits a mechanical signal to the accelerator pedal of the motor vehicle. i
