N-Amino-cycloheptyl-alkanoyl-anilide derivs. - useful for treating depression, less toxic than imipramine

Depression is treated by administering an anilide deriv. of formula (I) together with a pharmaceutical vehicle or diluent. (p is 0 or 1; Q is O or S; R is 1-3C alkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, vinyl, ethoxy or methoxymethyl; R1 is 1-3C alkyl; R2 is 1-3C alkyl, (CH2)nN(CH3)2, (CH2)mC6H5 or 1-3C allylic alkenyl or NR1R2 = pyrrolidino or piperidino; n = 2 or 3; m = 1 or 2; Y and Z are H, F, Cl, Br, CF3, 1-2C alkyl, N3, 1-2C alkoxy, but Z must be H if Y is CF3 or N3. When Y - 1-2C alkoxy and Z is H, Y must be at 3 position; when Y and Z are both halo or alkoxy they are at 3 and 4, or 4 and 5 positions.) (I) and their acid addn. salts are new cpds. provided R is not 1-3C alkyl. (I) are less toxi than imipramine so can be given over longer periods. The dose is 4-400 mg per day.
