Container loading apparatus for ships, having a boom which is connected via a stable ball-bearing slewing rim with perpendicular axis to a cantilever girder which in turn is mounted via a stable ball-bearing slewing rim with perpendicular axis on a supporting column arranged on the hull, and in which apparatus a liftable and lowerable spreader pivotable through a full circle is suspended on the free end of the boom via ropes, the rope winch together with drive for a lifting rope being mounted in the ship-side end of the boom, which lifting rope is run via a rope pulley, arranged on the free end of the boom, to a pair of rope pulleys lying one behind the other, which are mounted on the supporting device for the spreader, and the end of the lifting rope is fastened to the end of the boom.
