It is intended to produce a substrate for an electro-optical display device, which substrate carries a layer from which an electrode pattern and conductor path pattern are produced, the conductor paths being provided at least partially with a metal coating. The substrate is produced by means of a method in which a metal coating is initially deposited over the entire surface of the substrate, is produced in a superimposed manner on the electrode pattern and conductor path pattern in the metal coating and in the layer, and the metal coating on the electrodes and conductor paths is finally removed, except for the remaining sections.
