A process and a device are indicated which are used for lettering coated or impregnated, in particular diazo-coated paper with ink. To ensure rapid penetration, resistant to wiping, of the ink into the paper surface, the coated surface of the paper is moistened before or during or after the application of the ink with a water- or alcohol-containing moisturising medium.
