<p>A metering device, for example a parking meter, is battery (17) operable with a processing and control circuit (16) which switches between a high power and a low power mode in cooperation with a card (C) having two separated magnetic strips (M4, M5) to one side of its magnetic data strip (M1, N1, M2, N2, M3). A magnetic sensor (HS) in front of a shutter (SH) is continuously enabled in the low power mode. When a card (C) is manually inserted and the first magnetic strip (M4) passes the sensor (HS) the circuit (16) temporarily switches to the high power mode to operate the shutter (SH). Only if and when the card (C) is further manually inserted to where the second magnetic strip (M5) passes the sensor (HS), the circuit (16) again switches to the high power mode for the duration of an operation in which the device moves the card and processes its magnetic data.</p> |
