In a process for hydrogenating gasification of lignite, using a hydrogen-containing gasifying agent in a fluidised bed, the residual coke (3) thus arising is used as carbon carrier in a converter (1) for producing gas (5) or gas and crude iron or steel (4). The converter gas (5) thus arising is used for producing the gasifying agent (12, 13) for the hydrogenating gasification. Only a small part of the lignite (7) is gasified, so that the residual coke (3) has a relatively high carbon content. The unconverted hydrogen (20) is separated from the product gas (14) obtained in the hydrogenating gasification and is likewise recycled to the hydrogenating gasification (6). The carbon monoxide likewise present in the product gas (14) is converted with steam to carbon dioxide. After it has been separated off, the remaining hydrogen is likewise passed into the hydrogenating gasifier (6). <IMAGE>
