The band saw for cutting workpiece portions of any desired length, in particular from metallic workpieces (W), has a carrier (1) which can be moved relative to the workpiece (W) in the feed direction and two wheels (4, 5) which are mounted on the carrier (1) and around each of which the endless saw band (6) passes over half their circumference. The axles (A1, A2) of both wheels (4, 5) are arranged parallel to the cutting plane and in the feed direction (V1). The saw band (6) is pressed against approximately half the circumference of each wheel (4, 5) from outside by contact-pressure means (D). Both wheels (4, 5) are driven and due to a slight difference in the peripheral speeds (V) of the two wheels (4, 5) only the working strand (6') of the saw band (6) is under tension.
