In order to reduce or preclude the disadvantages of gun barrels having a rifled profile, such as high production costs, a high braking effect on the projectile, escape of propulsion means, unfavourable aerodynamic characteristic of the projectile as a result of buckling, grooves etc., more difficult modification of the barrel inner wall for matching to local characteristics etc., and in order to increase the life of the barrel, the range and the target accuracy, and in order to transmit the rotation energy which is necessary for stabilisation in free flight, the gun barrel is turned about its longitudinal axis with a preferably smooth inner wall, by means of an auxiliary drive source or by means of dissipation of the energy of the propulsion means or the recoil energy. The rotation speed, duration and direction can be changed as required directly at the location of use. As a result of the gyroscopic effect of rotation, which is also used for stabilisation of the gun barrel itself, external influences, such as unevennesses of the terrain, sea state, unsteady holding of the weapon etc., are precluded or reduced. In addition, the smooth barrel inner wall allows projectiles consisting of hard metal and metallic sealing strips to be used.
