The invention relates to a method for detecting oil traces in water, using an IR absorption-measuring apparatus (3) comprising a cuvette (2) and a metering part (4), cuvette and metering part being connected via a capillary line (11), and the metering part (4) being connected via two capillary lines (10, 12), to an oil/water feed line (14) in which a dispersing pump (16) is arranged. If there are traces of heavy oil, the emulsion, which is supplied by the dispersing pump and flows through the capillary lines, the metering part and the measuring cuvette, is not stable, so that measurement errors result. The invention achieves a stable emulsion even in the case of heavy-oil traces, by the oil/water stream (17) having an emulsifying solution metered in upstream of the dispersing pump (16).
