A liquid crystal phase having particularly advantageous properties can be obtained by mixing at least one component selected from the group C consisting of the compounds of the formulae VII to X <IMAGE> in which R<3> and R<4> each denote R or <IMAGE> and R denotes an alkyl having 1 to 12 C atoms, in which one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups can also be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -O-CO- or -CO-O- and R<5> and R<6> each independently of one another denote alkyl having 1-12 C atoms, in which one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups can also be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -O-CO- or -CO-O- and R<7> denotes <IMAGE> R or R<8>, where R is defined as indicated above, and R<8> denotes alkyl having 1 to 12 C atoms, in which one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups can also be replaced by -O- or -CO-, with other suitable liquid crystalline compounds.
