A work head (11) for labelling workpieces (12) is described, in which a character (13) has to be written by an activatable tool (23) by relative movement between the work head (11) and the workpiece (12). In order to be able to carry out the labelling of the workpieces (12) with a plurality of characters (13) considerably more quickly and, in doing so, not to have to multiply correspondingly either the control expenditure or the constructional expenditure in terms of tools (23), the work head (11) is provided with a plurality of tools (23) which are arranged at a fixed distance from one another and can be activated individually and independently of one another. In this case, the relative movement between the work head (11) and the workpiece (12) is determined by the 7-segment illustration of the character to be written. <IMAGE>
